Yeah, they pretty much spelled out Pino was Raul's adopted daughter early in the series. From the first few episodes, we know that she was treated like a true daughter by her "mother"...well, until the baby arrive and Mom decided to try and sell Pino back by claiming she has the Cog disease (which she doesn't at this point), thus summoning Vincent. Later on, there is a segment when Raul is having his "Vincent is the victor, I'm the loser" crazy moods and he mentions the fact he even lost his daughter to him (can't remember if it's visual or audio wise though). It was pretty well spelled out -_- ....

My theories and interpretations on Ergo proxy

Personally i think its one of the best animes i ever saw. It is really brilliant. I watched the series over and over again and i continue to discover new things every time i watch it.

The following are some theories of mine. I hope they will help you understand the anime better. Yet, the nicest thing of this anime is that its open for interpretations. :)

It looks that Real seems to be an imperfect/incomplete clone of Monad. I dont think it was ergo who created her but it was actually Daedalus (this is suggested when Deadalus watched videos of Real as a child) probably under orders of Donov Mayer. Why? I read from somewhere else that Donov wanted to attract ergo to Romdo again. That's also one possible reason why Donov attacked Mosco kidnapped Monad but since she remained unconscious she was useless. The exact reason why she was created still remains vague to me.

However, who created Real and for what purpose loses all significant to me in comparision to what she manages to do while she searched for the truth. Monad and Real might look like each other but they are intrinsically different in charater no matter from what perspective you see them (symbolically they even wear opposite colours). Real's and Vincent's character clash a lot too but believe it or not with her bossy attitude of hers she manages to change vincent. She continously challanges Vincent... to be decisive, to believe in himself. Also, Real being a human manages to give Vincent something that Monad was never able to give him as a proxy. Maybe Real is incomplete in every way... she is incomplete as a proxy and incomplete as a human but still she wanted to live and she always fought to live even when she knew that the truth about their existence would only bring unhappiness and misery. In this sense she gave Vincent purpose or "reason d'etre" ... a reason to continue living and a will to fight back the orignal creators in order for him and his creations (the incomplete humans) to continue living!

Something else.... I never quite digested the idea that vincent and real's romantic affair was something automoatic, destinated. It is true, that Real being Monad clone might have was predisposed to love ergo .... infact when Real recalling her first encouter with ergo she states she was attracted to ergo as much as she feared him. She never showed particular interest in Vincent. Real simply ran after vincent because ergo appeared where ever he was. I think she really showed some interest in vincent only by episode 16 where she realizes that she basically had information about the proxy but practically knew nothing about vincent. :0)

With earth revivd the proxies and their incomplete humans were not needed anymore. So this is what the pulse of awakening is.... destruction of all proxies (thats why they killed each other), destruction of the incomplete humans and thier creations ... that is the cities and the autoreves. The very fact that ergo kills every proxy he meets in an unconscious state proves that for proxies killing each other was more of an instinct than a chioce. That is why, i believe ergo decides to lose his memory. An attemtp to escape from his fate. Indeed it was an act of desperation. Who would not despair knowing that he was born to destroy his own creations (the incomplete humans), other beings like him and finally vanish himsel??? At least for me and you, we know that once we die we will leave behind our inhertance... our children and work. For Ergo this was not a possibility.

It's cool how ultimatly he still manages to escape his fate... not by running away from it but by accepting what he was.

Monad and Ergo Where lovers

Monad and Ergo Where lovers its even said in one of the episodes where Ergo fights with the other proxy that was in love with a proxy that he killed. However a few other episodes touch on how the humans where created by the proxies. So i'm assuming they're all somewhat clones of the proxy that made them. So Re-l could have been created by Monad or with Monads genes. I'm assuming the reason Ergo kills Monad is simply becuse anytime a Proxy comes in contact with another, they have to fight (why they do it, I have no idea).

Also I'm assuming Proxy One is the missing part of Vincent (Ergo Proxy). The part that he stashed away never to remember again. Vincent now remembers everything so that part of him shows up and they fight over dominince. The second Re-l (Monad) apears becuse Daedalus had access to Monads original body. He made her in Monads image (why he did it, I have no idea). I'm guessing he did it becuse Daedalus was created by Ergo in the beginning and Ergo was in love with Monad.

These are all just my observations and guesses. The show was really good but really confusing twords the end. Although I'm happy it ended the way it did. I dont really see how they could continue the show any more since the word has been reborn and all the humans that left the panet are now comming back. Ergo is just going to live his life as a normal humin since he would die if he turned into Ergo Proxy. Unless he has a second job given to him by the creator to look over the humans and act as a grim reaper.

Re-l=Real=Monad

Can I just comment on how quickly the 'white' Real grew up into Monad?
   Maybe Real have 'amnesia' like Vincent as well..
Then again, they might be all spare clones of the proxies made by Daedalus to ensure the city would not fall??
   I think Real was a clone of Monad as I think I heard that she was given the amirita cells therapy which belongs to proxies...
   Also why is Monad Proxy so ugly??
Can somebody please untwist my twisted thinking?

As to the meaning of the words Emissary and Proxy...

In English an Emissary is acting as a proxy for a another, except Emissary is a more official term and carries a different connotation. Agent, representative, delegate would have worked, (but all would have slightly different implication - hence the problem with using a thesaurus).

In the original context, Emissary sounds better, as it implies he is a proxy for a greater power, after all Governments have Emissaries, you and I do not. It's not totally different to proxy, but proxy is a more general term. If I asked you to pick up a package from the Post Office for me, you would be my proxy - Would Death's proxy be open to such menial tasks

The art of subtitling lies in getting across the meaning of speech, rather than a literal translation, and most programs are subtitled so that the phrases written on the screen are short enough so the average person can read them quickly.

"if you want to make the sentense sound more dramatic, sure, choose whichever word you see fit."

I suppose what I'm trying to say is don't be afraid to use other words to get across the meaning, since it is a drama would you like to convey that drama or run the risk of a sub being labelled bland because the same word is used constantly?

I only add those last comments because I assume you want to be known for doing great subs, and/or to enhance your English skills. (though I know you didn't sub this series.)

I have downloaded Ergo Proxy but have yet to watch it. Since it seems to get the thumbs up here I'll look forward to it now. Coincidentally it will be aired here in Australia soon, (which reminded me I had it and lead me to these comments ), but I expect that will be an English dub.

P.S. I didn't post the first "interpretation", this is my first and probably last comment on the subject.

Here's my point of view on this sublime anime series, which, in my idea, could have become a cult anime series, if not for certain things... So, the proxies are the 'hands of god', brought on the surface of Earth by the creator to repopulate it and make it livable again, all this on the command of the Creator.. Then, once that was done, they were to be destroyed n consumed by the sun? blue sky? (monad in the last episode disintegrated when exposed to an open sky..) .. well there'd be somethin that'd destroy those Amrita cells (cute name btw..) As for Ergo, due to his presumed incompleteness, he left Romdeau after he created it and emigrated to Moscow out of despair, where he left his memories to that old autorave with an oriental hat n who seemed to be forgettin things as well.. Then, for some reason, Ergo, or i should say vincent (Ergo went schyzo..) was drawn to Romdeau again and went back to that dome and enrolled in that Autorave Control unit or whatever.. Btw, did anyone of u notice the word AWAKENING appear in the bowl of milk and cereals when vincent spilled the milk? it comes one letter after the other.. watch closely.. I believe monad n ergo were lovers before, just like those 2 other proxies kazkis n senekis.. Re-l, i think was a clone of monad, maybe made, on the request of the councilor Donov, by daedelus... but i'm not sure of that one.. In any case, monad came to Re-l's place to kill her as she was jealous.. N given vincent was near the house of Re-l at the time, he eventually was forced subconsciously to turn into its proxy form n interpose between the 2.. But one thing that's bothering me was that Ergo came 1st into Re-l's bathroom.. Concerning pino, she certainly is Raul's 'girl'.. well she's a companion autorave anyway.. Also, concerning the clone Re-l that appeared around the end of the series, she's also a clone of monad(which explains why she ressembles Re-l), but one that's a perfect clone with the attributes of a proxy as well..daedelus managed to do that somehow, but wanted it all for himself, which was in itself impossible as the perfectly cloned monad still had that feeling of love for vincent.. Now, wat's intriguing me in this all is the role Proxy One played in it all.. Is it an independent proxy, a mirror or Ergo, a clone? i'm not sure myself.. anyone? Why was he sitting and waiting for Ergo? and wat about those dolls in the councilor's chamber? r they autoraves? When that nuke that Raul launched hit moscow, there was a proxy there who clearly seemed distraught when that missile hit.. could it have been Proxy one? there are still some questions that are left unanswered i should say..... i'll be grateful if anyone could shed some light..

You do know that pino's connection to raul is revealed in the very first episode if you pay attention. Samantha (raul's wife, who we know is Pino's "mama") says : Do you know who my father is? He is the cheif of the security beauro.
So it's no huge mystery. I didnt notice it at first but even then it's not that hard to guess.

Pino is a companion type of autorave. She was like a daughter to Raul's family (I dont think anyone and romdeau can have children through natural methods, therefor often times they use autoraves as a substitution). Raul's family was killed by Monad and Pino was all he had left. Its partly why he hates Vincent so much because Raul believes Vincent took everything away, including Pino.

Although it may look like Raul didnt care when his family was killed in the mall, but you could tell he was shaken. His entourage even commented on how his personality changed in the episode after his family died.

I think that Real may actually be a copy of monad. This may explain why monad was initially targeting Real. Also Ergo Proxy in episode 1 grabbed her face and shed a tear thinking she was monad. That might explain the awakening bit (probably thought monad erased her memories). He did not realize that the real Monad was really Monad since she was wearing a mask.

The last episode of Ergo Proxy. The story got really complicated up to this point, with lots of mysteries waiting to be solved. Like, what's Pino's connection with Raul, what's Vincent's role in Romdeau's creation, why is Re-l's name "Re-l" but not "Real", etc.

This episode would reveal many of those mysteries, a few of them are vaguely mentioned. A solid ending overall, I especially liked Vincent's last line, "I am Ergo Proxy, the proxy of death".
