I can play x264, and mkv. But is anyone using Mac? I have 1.4 GHz PowerPC G4, Mac OS 10.3.9 and latest VLC
But this plays very slowly.
Is there an easier way? Or should I get the LQ's?

@Anonymous: I estimate a G4 1.4Ghz has about the processing power of a P4 1.8Ghz?

If I'm correct, then yes, you should try the LQ's instead, or get one of those new intel Macs. Considering that the Mac OS X is not the most efficient OS in the world(despite the fact that it looks nice and gives you the illusion that it's responsive, and I desperately want to get my hands on one).

@Anonymous: Your machine might be borderline. I have a 1.67 powerbook and can play x264 up to 480p (720p skips occasionally in high motion scenes). I suggest having a minimum of 1GB ram and having tiger is a big plus. There is a pretty substantial speed increase from 10.3.9 to 10.4.8.

Actually, x264 should play fine up to 720p on these machines but it seems with the intel transistion no one is really spending a lot of time to optimize code for altivec (Apple included). x264 ppc in vlc I believe hasn't been updated since March? There is no way x264 is optimezed for ppc when my friends Macbook Pro (2.16GHz) with one core disabled takes about 15%-20% cpu. Where my Powerbook is pegged at 100% and stutters

For proof of what optimization can do look at the performance gain of the optimized altivec client for seti@home vs. Berkeley's altivec client, over 50% increase in speed with G5's still wiping the floor with all but the fastest Opteron and Xeon chips.

Anyway the point is this is a symptom of the death of consumer PPC.

okay i have a prob, im using a macbook pro and vlc player but i have absolutely no idea how do i get the subtitles to show up, ive looked through the faq's and read up on the cccp but id have to compile mplayer for myself and well, lets just say theres a higher chance of it snowing in africa than me being able to do that, any help peeps? :S

I use a iBook G4 with only a 1GB processor and I have no problems if I stick to the LQs and use mplayer. It works great and I prefer it over VLC, but it is a little tricker to figure out how to get the subs to show up.

@survient: Just to follow up on all this... If you have not upgraded to Tiger and want to use MPlayer, don't download the older pre-Tiger MPlayer on file at Sourceforge. It doesn't seem to give good results. I just remembered that I went thru a lot of struggles initially, and after doing some reading, most people seem to have better results when they downloaded the "official" mPlayer version from its site.

I know this version works with OSX 10.3.9, and there are versions at the MPlayer site that are even older. There is a lot of scary talk about compliling and skins, but honestly I didn't do any of that, and mine works fine. If you want the extra codecs and things, they are available if you are comfortable dealing with them.

Most things I try to play work ok, as long as I stick to lower quality and don't throw anything like the H264 stuff at it that I know my teeny little 1GB processor can't handle. I don't blame MPlayer for that though, I blame my limited budget and the age of my Mac.

I know I am repeating a bit, but if you didn't see the other post I made about Mplayer a little earlier, this was a really helpful page for me in learning how to use some of the somewhat poorly documented features for the subtitles and alternate audio tracks.

@auntiehistamine: 5'd the link for the thread, lol boobies........wait.......nm, forget the 5ing, wrong site. Anyway, as for h264 on a 1Ghz!!!(not GB) you should be able to play it just fine, I dunno why it's acting up. H264 is a heavy CPU load codec, but if you close out of excess programs, and make sure you clean up a bit(defrag, on OSX don't worry about it, but just cleanup in general) it should be able to run. Granted my PC is a higher ended one, it doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to. my friend had a 947 Mhz processor, intel P3 I think, and it ran fine, after I cleaned up a few things, and got rid of a lot of garbage(he never cleaned it). If it's not running ok after that, come back, I've got a few more solns if it doesn't run properly.

Since Luperry got his batch out..  and the fact that im running Vista.. and having a hell of a time getting everything running right..   Ill probably be going back..  this is to buggy for my tastes..  things keep crashing..  none of the games i could play before work.  (FFXI EVE)  ive had to move to Utorrent..  because AZ wont run on vista...  (ARG) ^^

@DarkMist: That's why I use the transformation kit ^_^. Looks just as good as vista, runs like xp.

@oldjoe: These files go under different names because they are different file. This tracker he has, all the files are the one released by luperry through out the serris. When Lu released the batch file he re encoded them to fix some minor syncing errors and to keep a consistent file, as said so by the post about the batch. The bad news is i have had both theses trackers and lu's is the one with the least peers and worse download speeds.

the crc hashes match those posted on aniDB of the 2 versions of the files.

Well,I've a problem since the anime play,using core mediaplayer and window media classic, very slow just like a stop motion and when I play it using vlc it have only the voice with no picture who can help me T^T.

For those who are having trouble playing the filetype/subs go to Demonoid.com and dl the latest version of BSPro. i have not verified the Mac usage of this program, as i have a custom Built PC with a XP OS. I have currently a 1.75Ghz Athlon XP processer, and i dontr need any Codec's due to the program. It is another torrent sight, and its 100% secure. I recomend it to everyone.Works like a dream.
