Les Misérables: Shoujo Cosette

A new anime this season that is based on the 19th century novel, and it's currently on the 4th episode(yet to see a sub group to pick this one up).

The story takes place in early 19th century France. Cosette is the daughter of Fantine. Unable to secure a job as a single mother, Fantine decides to pay an inn keeper couple to look after Cosette, while she tries to find a job on her own. However, being cruel and corrupt, the couple treat Cosette in a manner Fantine can never imagine...

With a little girl been left behind by her mother, and found herself in an unimaginable situation, I found the anime to be very emotional. I've never read the novel, so I can't comment on how closely it sticks to the original story. But according to the sources I've looked at, the original novel had a "multitude of plots", and most likely, the anime will only focus on Cosette's childhood.

The art style is a lot like some of the western styled animes from the 80s(something I really enjoyed as a toddler), and it's airing in full HDTV glory.

The attached song is the ending theme. Cool

Reminds me of Akazukin Chacha, at least the art style does. I hope someone picks it up and runs with it, however what is really bothering me so far, is the difference in textures used on the characters and the backgroud. The background seems so much more detailed than the character itself. But I guess that is the style of such a series

I think that's true for all non-CG animes(or animations in general), animated objects(characters) are always less detailed than still objects(backgrounds). well, most animated movies got detailed animated objects, and that's one of the reasons why movies take a long time to produce.

it's noticable in this case, I guess it's because the backgrounds are more detailed in comparison to other animes, so in contrast, it would appear like the characters are not so detailed.

and here is a good illustration from Bleach, just look at the stone go flat...

Wasn't this book made into a broadway musical or something?
Seemings like a strange choice for a japanese producer to pick up

Les Misérables was an excellent piece of literature.  I hope a sub group picks it up.

I think there was at least one animates serries made in Japan before since i remember watching the serries at least twice when I lived in Middle-East (I was about 7~8 years old when I watched the old one). I'm looking forward to see this version.
Usualy when a story has been produced before it puts more weight on the shorlers of the new producers since there are people who are going to compare different productions from every aspect. It looks like the new production has to be much better than the original one depending on their target audience.

This story is completely made up by the animators. Cosette, in the novel, serves as motivation for the protagonist Jean Valjean. Cosette's mother is cared for by Valjean when he is the respected mayor of a small town. The mother dies of consumption, and Valjean's true identity as an escaped convict is revealed. After that he flees with Cosette, fearing for her safety in the cruel and beligerent post-revolutionary France. The story in this anime has nothing to do with the novel, and sounds more like an adaptation of Cinderella. An anime adaptation of Les Miserables, which, in the original, is over 1300 pages, would be twice as long as the longest anime series to date. Multiple times as long. It would be the Doctor Who of anime. Maybe if Clamp, Gainax, and Studio Ghibli got together and pooled all their resources... One can dream.

I would doubt that it would be the longest ever
I mean look at pokemon 500+ episodes
At least Les Mis has a definant ending

Agreed... POkemon is a never ending story... Not even the tale with no end was as long as pokemon is >_> (huh.. not sure if that was the name.. i remember the spanish name being "la historia sin fin" It was a nice cartoon/movie and whatever...) LOL... I don't think there is an anime that has lasted as long as pokemon...

@gridsleep: So, what?
1300 pages isn't much, especially since it takes several pages to cover even one episode of an anime. You can cover that whole book in a short OVA or even a bit longer movie.

I wonder if they ever made an anime based on Hamlet...

@Skeith The Terror Of Death: Conan comes close with 464 episodes and a few dozen movies, and it's still ongoing. ^^;

Well, you see many 1200 + page books being turned into successful movies, even. Its definatly possible to make an Anime Series about it. Look at Romance of the Three Kingdoms, its two 1200 page books, and they managed to make quite a convincing series out if it >live action<

Sazaesan: Anime with +1800 Episodes and counting.
The 4koma itself has over 6000 strips.

I also noticed that there is an avi version available, which I am trying. So far the download is going well.

@b4k4ni04: ...and are available by bittorrent at this link for anyone who wants this series with subs.

I haven't found out much about this group, but the downloads went well and they seem to play ok. No new eps posted beyond 2 as of this date, but I keep checking back to see.

The other fansubber group hasn't posted episode 2 yet.

@gridsleep: I haven't read the unabridged version of Les Miserables, but I'm betting some of the factors are the same. I'm a little confused because Cosette seems to have made friends with Gavroche, who originally took to the streets when he was really young, and for some reason they have a random dog. But okay. At least they keep the names right, and I'm hoping they'll go into Cosette's older life--please please please let there be Marius. Please.

@Shuhei: yes I was turned into a broadway show and it does seem and odd choice for an anime but as long as it's well done it could be one of the most brilliant animes ever!
